Initial Situation

voestalpine Tubulars manufactures a massive spectrum of seamless steel and specialty pipes for industry, energy supply, and mobility.

The problem: Many of these highly complex products are built to be invisible in everyday life—whether deep underground as oilfield pipes, as geothermal and hydrogen solutions, or as load-bearing elements in giant cranes and tunnels.

Traditional film and photography reach their physical limits here. There was no visual material capable of making the full variety, quality, and scale of the products tangible at a glance in their real, often hidden, applications.

Our Approach

As a technical and creative partner, HYBRID shattered these visual boundaries using high-end CGI and 3D rendering. We developed highly detailed, gigantic key visuals for each product category. These epic sceneries—enriched with fine historical details like the Styrian Erzberg in the background—unite the entire product spectrum within a single, breathtaking world.

Because the renderings are designed for massive trade show walls spanning several meters, every pixel was optimized for uncompromising depth of detail.

In addition, we produced clean, uniform individual renderings of all products. To reveal the built-in pipes and profiles in context, we rendered the surrounding machinery, buildings, and soil layers transparent using a special glass effect. This subtly suggests the environment while the voestalpine product takes center stage, glowing in a striking blue.

Project Innovations

To realize this project visually and technically at the highest level, we leveraged our deep technical understanding and established new production standards at the code level:

  • Procedural Terrain: A custom-built setup enabled us to precisely control massive landscapes. Roads can be drawn with simple lines, causing trenches, plains, and bodies of water to adapt fully automatically and topologically correctly.

  • Gigantic Data Processing: We processed billions of blades of grass, leaves, and structures in a single dataset. Through specialized matrix algorithms, we were able to render these monumental scenes without loss of detail or the need to switch software.

  • Multi-Layer Glass Shader: Development of a complex glass material with multiple layers and varying indices of refraction (IOR). 

Aside from the top-tier quality of the individual renderings, the collaboration was outstanding! We appreciated the quick feedback at every stage, the expert advice, and the transparency and flexibility regarding deadlines. The project management was excellent from start to finish. 😊 This wasn't our first project together, and it certainly won't be our last. Thank you for the great work!

Drafted as a preliminary 3D scene enhanced by AI and Photoshop. Recreated in a native 3D environment and finalized as a full 3D production with high-end VFX compositing.
