Initial Situation

Schmachtl approached us to promote their GasTouch system, a state-of-the-art gas detection unit. Instead of producing just another dry industrial film for technicians and Chief Safety Officers (CSOs), we asked a fundamental question:

What does this system actually do?

It saves buildings, secures facilities, and above all, protects human lives. The challenge was to powerfully convey the potentially catastrophic consequences of an unprotected industrial facility within just a few seconds. The goal was to send a clear message: safety is not an option, but a necessity.

Our Approach

At HYBRID, we believe in the power of merging technology with storytelling to bypass traditional production limits. Our approach was built around a gripping “what-if” scenario:

We stage a spectacular explosion in a power plant to unmistakably demonstrate the fatal consequences of a lack of monitoring. We then rewind time to show reality with GasTouch actively deployed.

Through the targeted combination of live-action footage, motion design, and high-end VFX, we illustrate the rapid detection, intuitive touch controls on the electrical cabinet, and the seamless alarm transmission to the control center. This transforms a highly complex technical safety solution into a compelling narrative.

Project Innovations

  • Complex Destruction Simulations: The factory explosion required massive technical effort and physical precision. We combined 3D Explosia and smoke simulations with complex destruction modeling, particle systems, and fireballs. To maintain absolute control over every pixel and ensure correct depth sorting amidst the massive data sets of the explosion, the entire scene was assembled using Deep Compositing in Nuke.

  • Visualizing the Invisible: Because the most dangerous gases are often invisible, we deliberately avoided unrealistic smoke clouds. Instead, we created light refractions in the air to make the escaping gas look threatening yet transparent.
